Geography

Intent

A Holy Family Geographer can investigate geographical and human features of their local and wider environments around the world. They can read maps, identify key features and identify the ways in which we have an impact on the world. The skills acquired in geography allow the  children to not only imagine but fully understand and play a significant part in possible futures.

Implementation

Geography is taught every week for at least an hour during the Spring term.

Key Stage 1

Each class in KS1 explores a ‘big question’  that supports them in understanding locational knowledge (UK); place knowledge (a non-European country); human and physical geography; and geographical skills and fieldwork. Children develop knowledge about the world, the United Kingdom and their locality and learn subject-specific vocabulary relating to human and physical geography. They also use geographical skills, including first hand observations, to enhance their local awareness.

Key Stage 2

Each class in KS2 explores a ‘big question’ that supports them in understanding locational knowledge; place knowledge (comparing a region of the UK; a region in a European country, and a region within North/South America); human and physical geography; and geographical skills and fieldwork. Children extend their knowledge and understanding beyond the local area to include the United Kingdom and Europe, North and South America. This includes the location and characteristics of a range of the world’s most significant human and physical features. They also develop their use of geographical tools and skills to strengthen their locational and place knowledge.

Both Key Stages use Building the Kingdom to enhance the knowledge and understanding of geography that is taught.

Catholic Social Teaching

"Catholic Social Teaching is based on the belief that God has a plan for creation, a plan to build his kingdom of peace, love and justice." (Caritas in Action)

During geography lessons, we will make links to Catholic Social Teaching, which will support children in developing them into positive and thoughtful citizens of the future.
