The Hedgehogs (2016 - 2017)

Dear Parents

I am really looking forward to teaching the new Hedgehogs this year and expect a happy and hardworking year ahead.  I very much enjoyed meeting all the children,  when they came to visit their new class in term 6.

In the Autumn terms, our main creative topic focus will be Brazil, learning all about the country, its culture, peoples, customs, history, climate etc. If the children find any artefacts, books or recent newspaper articles relating to Brazil, could you please encourage them to bring the item into class. We will book a visit to Bristol Zoo this term, so that we can learn more about the animals and creatures which inhabit the Amazonian rainforests.

The children will be tested in their spellings shortly and will be grouped accordingly into their differentiated spelling groups. The teacher of each group will give out the spellings for the week  and the children will be tested the following week. Miss Arthur will be our designated support assistant for four mornings and we will also have the support of Mrs Nyarko every day. Miss James, a schools’ direct student ( PGCE ) will be with us this year. Your child will need his/her reading book in school every day and we ask that you please read as regularly as possible with them at home. We will be giving out  reading certificates every time the children reach a milestone number of recorded readings. Mrs Scriven will be leading a forest school session every Wednesday afternoon and Mrs Villordres will be teaching Spanish, also on Wednesday afternoons. Homework will be given out on Tuesday and I ask that they please return the completed homework by the following Tuesday. Children will continue to use the Mathletics programme. PE will be on Thursday and Fridays. PE kits and wellies should be in school at all times.

I know it’s some way off yet, but we’ll all be soon looking forward to the year 5 residential visit to Hooke Court in March. I will keep you posted of the date of our information evening, when you will be given details of the visit, including dates, costs and kit requirements etc.

I am really pleased that we are taking part in the Shakespeare for Schools Festival and we will be working towards a class production of Twelfth Night, which we will perform at The Tobacco Factory Theatre, on the evening of Tuesday, 22nd November. PLEASE keep this date clear in your diary.

Please do not hesitate to arrange to see me if you have any concerns that you would like to discuss.

P.S. Please find photographs within the tags to the right and attachments below.

Yours sincerely

Mr Handley
