As we came together to pray, we remembered that we were in week two of Lent. Lent is a time in which Christians prepare for the great feast of Easter, when Jesus rose from the dead, winning for us eternal life with God the Father in heaven.

In our Gospel reading, we heard how Jesus is shown to be God’s Son. Jesus took his closest disciples, Peter, James and John, up a mountain. When they were there, Jesus’ face and clothes were changed. His face shone and his clothes became brilliantly white. By making him glorious, God wanted Peter, James and John to know how very special Jesus is.

When they reached the top of the mountain, Jesus met two of the prophets, Moses and Elijah. A prophet is a messenger of God. Moses and Elijah were very important prophets for the Jewish people.

God had trusted Moses to give the people the Ten Commandments, and God had performed miracles through Elijah. By making the prophets appear on the mountain, God was showing the disciples that Jesus was greater even than Moses and Elijah, because Jesus is God’s Son.

God told the disciples to listen to Jesus. We are also disciples of Jesus, so God is asking us to listen to Jesus, too. How can we listen to Jesus?

We can hear Jesus speak to us through readings from the Gospels.

We can hear Jesus speak to us through those who care about us: family members who tell us how to stay safe; teachers who teach us how to learn; friends who are kind to us.

We can hear Jesus in our hearts; not in the way we hear someone speaking to us through our ears. Jesus speaks to us when we decide to share our sweets, or when we think about ways we can help someone in need, or when we think of a person who needs our prayers.

Another special way we can hear Jesus is through prayer. Prayer is a conversation. In prayer just like in any conversation we have with our friends, we talk to Jesus and listen to him in our hearts.
